Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven
If you smell gas in the kitchen, turn every burner knob fully off, open a window, and if the smell stays or gets stronger, get out and call your gas utility from outside. Rotten eggs or sulfur is the smell you're after, faint or strong. It doesn't matter which. Gas smells are the one thing you never wait out, so here's the order to work in, starting now.

Do These Things First, In This Order
1. Stop and check the burner knobs. A knob bumped off-center can leak unlit gas. Turn every knob fully off. 2. Open windows and the back door. Get air moving through the room. 3. Turn off the oven if it's on. 4. If the smell fades in a minute or two after the knobs are off, it was likely unburned gas from a knob or a pilot that didn't catch. 5. If the smell stays, or gets stronger, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Stay calm and move deliberately. Don't run around flipping switches. Most kitchen gas smells are small and fixable. A few are not, and you can't tell which from the doorway.
What Not to Do
Don't light a match, a candle, or a lighter. Not even to test the burner. Don't flip light switches on or off, don't unplug anything, and keep your hand off the range hood fan. Switches spark. Don't use your phone inside the house if the smell is strong. Step outside first. Don't pull the range out from the wall. The flex connector behind it is the last thing you want to stress. Don't take off the burner caps, the back panel, or the bottom oven panel looking for the source. Gas lines and fittings sit behind those. Don't assume a small smell is normal because it went away yesterday. Recurring smells mean something is loose.
When to Leave the House
Leave now if the smell is strong enough to make your eyes water or your head hurt. Leave if it's spread past the kitchen, or if you hear any hissing near the range or the wall. Take everyone with you, pets included. Go outside and down the block, not to the driveway. Don't stop to shut off the main gas valve unless it's outside and you already know where it is and how to turn it. In older Connecticut basements and walk-ups, that valve is often in a cramped corner behind other equipment. Not worth the delay. Call 911 or your gas utility's emergency line from outside. They come out for this.
Call the Utility or Call Us?
Call the gas utility when the smell is strong, spreading, coming from the wall or the floor, or when you're just not sure. They handle the supply side up to your shutoff. They come out at any hour and they don't charge you for a leak check. Call us once the utility has cleared the house and told you the appliance is the problem. That's our side of it: burner valves that won't seat, a cracked igniter that lets gas pool before it lights, a bad oven safety valve, a pilot assembly that keeps dropping out. Signs the Range Itself Is the Problem
A burner that clicks four or five times before it catches is dumping raw gas into your kitchen each time, and you'll smell it. That's an igniter or a dirty burner port. Yellow or orange flame tips instead of steady blue means bad combustion. Sooty pot bottoms tell the same story. An oven that smells for a minute at preheat but not after usually has a lazy safety valve or a weak glow bar. Smell only when the oven is off? That points to a valve not closing. Why does my gas smell like rotten eggs?
Natural gas has no odor on its own. Utilities add a sulfur-based scent so you can smell leaks, and that rotten egg smell is the additive doing its job. Treat it as real every time.
Is a small gas smell when I light a burner normal?
A brief whiff as the burner catches is common. A smell that lingers, or takes several clicks to light, is not. That usually means a weak igniter or blocked burner ports.
Should I shut off gas to just the stove?
Only if there's an accessible shutoff valve you can reach without moving the range. If not, leave it alone and call the utility. Don't wrestle the appliance away from the wall.
