Microwave Runs But Food Stays Cold
The turntable spins. The light comes on. The fan hums. You hear the timer count down. Then you pull out your coffee and it's still cold. That combination, everything runs, nothing heats, is one of the most common calls we get. It almost always points to the parts that make the heat, not the parts that make the noise.

What "runs but doesn't heat" actually tells us
A microwave has two separate jobs. One set of parts moves air, spins the plate, and lights the cavity. Another set makes the microwave energy that heats food. When the first group works and the second doesn't, the fault sits in the high-voltage side or in a switch that tells the unit it's safe to fire. Good news: the control board is usually fine, since it's still counting down and running the fan. That narrows things a lot before anyone touches a screwdriver. It also means the noise you hear is no proof the oven is cooking. We start our diagnosis right there.
Cause one: door switches and latch (cheapest first)
Every microwave has two or three small switches in the door latch. They confirm the door is shut before the unit will produce heat. On older units, and on doors that get slammed in a tight galley kitchen, those switches wear out or fall out of alignment. When one fails, the oven will often still run the fan and light, but it refuses to heat, because it can't confirm the door is closed. This is a common find and a straightforward part swap. Look for a door that feels loose, rattles, or needs a shove to click. That's a clue worth mentioning when you call.
Cause two: the high-voltage parts
Behind the panel sits a group of components that step household power up to the level needed to make heat. A diode, a capacitor, or the magnetron itself can fail. When they go, you get exactly what you're seeing: a machine that acts alive but cooks nothing. Sometimes there's a buzz or hum that wasn't there before, or a faint burnt smell. Do not open the cabinet. The capacitor inside can hold a dangerous charge long after the unit is unplugged, even if the microwave is completely dead. This is the one repair we ask homeowners to leave alone entirely.
Cause three: a blown thermal fuse or thermal cutout
Microwaves have protective cutouts that trip when the cavity or magnetron gets too hot. A blocked vent, a long run at high power, or running the oven empty can trip one. Some reset themselves as things cool. Others are one-time fuses that must be replaced. If your microwave stopped heating after a heavy cooking session, or after a stretch when the vent was covered, this family moves to the top of our list. Over-the-range units in older homes are especially prone to it, the duct behind them is often crowded or partly blocked.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Safe: unplug the unit for a minute, then plug it back in. Check that the outlet works with something else. Make sure the door closes with a clean click. Confirm you're not running a low power setting or a defrost cycle. Clear anything blocking the vents. Stop there. We come with a meter and a documented test load. We measure current draw, test each door switch, check the cutouts, and safely discharge the capacitor before anything else. That last step is why this isn't a DIY job. Call us and tell us the model and what you heard when it quit.

Microwave Runs But Food Stays Cold — what people ask
Is it worth repairing or should I replace it?
Depends on the part and the unit. A door switch or thermal fuse is a small repair. A failed magnetron on a built-in or over-the-range unit is a bigger conversation. We tell you what failed before you decide.
Can I keep using it until you arrive?
We'd rather you didn't. If it's not heating, it isn't doing the job anyway, and running it may stress a part that's already failing. Unplug it or pull the breaker and wait for the visit.
Why does it hum louder than it used to?
A new hum or buzz often points to the high-voltage side straining or a cooling fan losing bearings. Note when you hear it, start of the cycle or partway through. That detail helps us narrow the cause.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell or see. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions first so the tech shows up with the likely parts already on the truck.
- Step 2
We come look
Pick a window that works for you. The tech tests the machine and checks power, water and drainage, then tells you what failed in plain words. No jargon. No guessing out loud at your kitchen table.
- Step 3
Repair or straight answer
Most jobs finish on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you what it is and why. And if the unit isn't worth fixing, we say that, then you decide.
