The independent appliance repair shop across the Northeast
Built-In Microwave Repairs
We repair built-in and over-the-range microwaves across the fourteen states we cover, so call us and we'll sort out whether yours is worth the part before anybody pulls it off the wall. Maybe it stopped heating. Maybe the turntable quit, the door latch sticks, or the panel lights up and does nothing. Either way, you've got a unit trimmed into cabinetry and a decision to make.

From the technicians at Elite AR
Built-in is a different animal than countertop
A countertop microwave is easy math. A built-in isn't. Yours sits in a trim kit, or over the range, cut into cabinets a carpenter fitted years ago. Swap it and the new unit may not match the opening. We see this constantly in older Northeast housing stock: 1990s cabinet runs sized for a box nobody makes anymore. That means filler strips, new trim, sometimes a cabinet shop. Repairing a five-year-old built-in with one bad part usually beats reopening the cabinetry, and that one fact tilts a lot of these calls toward repair.
Age, fault type, parts, in that order
Age matters, but not the way people think. A twelve-year-old unit that's been quiet and clean can be worth a part. A four-year-old unit already on its third fault is telling you something. Fault type matters more. Door switches, latches, turntable motors, control panels and touchpads are common and usually straightforward. Heating faults are trickier and depend on what failed. Then parts. If the part number is still made and shipping, we can plan. If it's discontinued and no supplier shows stock, no amount of skill fixes that. We check availability before we recommend anything.
What we do when we're standing in your kitchen
First we confirm the symptom ourselves, because "it won't heat" can mean five things. We check the door and latch. A microwave that thinks the door is open won't run. We look at how the unit is mounted and vented, since over-the-range models trapped in greasy, restricted vents fail early, and that changes our advice. We read fault codes if the board gives them. Then we tell you what part it needs and whether that part exists. Plain sentences. If replacement is the better call, we say so out loud.
When we tell you to replace it
Some cases aren't close. A microwave with rust eating through the cavity floor or a burned interior liner should go. Multiple failures at once, board and door system together, is a bad bet on an older unit. Discontinued parts with no aftermarket equivalent end the conversation. Water damage from a leak above is another. Same with any unit where the cavity itself is compromised, since that's a shielding problem and not a part swap. We'd rather lose the repair than take money for something we know won't hold.
Safe things you can check before we come out
Start with the outlet or breaker. Over-the-range units are often on a dedicated circuit that trips quietly. Open and close the door firmly, because a lazy latch is a real cause of no-start. Clear the vent filter under an over-range model and check the grease screen. Confirm the child lock or demo mode isn't on; the manual shows the button combo. Wipe the touchpad dry if something spilled. Stop there. Do not remove the outer case or reach behind the panel. Microwaves hold stored charge that stays dangerous long after you unplug them. Call us and we'll take it from the cover on.

Built-In Microwave Repairs — what people ask
My microwave runs but food stays cold. Is that fixable?
Often yes, depending on which component failed. Some heating faults come down to a common part. Others aren't practical on an aging unit. We diagnose it, check parts availability, and tell you which situation you're in.
Can I just buy a countertop unit instead?
You can, but the built-in opening stays empty and unfinished. Some homeowners are fine with that. If you plan to sell, an open hole in the cabinet run tends to raise questions.
Do you work on over-the-range models?
Yes. Those are common in the homes we visit, and they bring their own headaches: restricted venting, grease buildup, mounting bolts driven into old studs. We handle the removal and reinstall as part of the work.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell or see. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions first so the tech shows up with the likely parts already on the truck.
- Step 2
We come look
Pick a window that works for you. The tech tests the machine and checks power, water and drainage, then tells you what failed in plain words. No jargon. No guessing out loud at your kitchen table.
- Step 3
Repair or straight answer
Most jobs finish on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you what it is and why. And if the unit isn't worth fixing, we say that, then you decide.

Why homeowners call us
- Old houses don't scare usRowhouse kitchens, narrow cellar stairs, stacked units jammed into closets. We've pulled machines through doorways built long before these appliances existed. We protect floors and trim, and everything goes back where it stood.
- Symptom-first diagnosisA dryer that runs cold and a dryer that trips the breaker are two different problems. We test before we replace. That keeps us from swapping out good parts and handing you a bill for nothing.
- Independent, not a brand agentWe repair all major brands and answer to no manufacturer. So we recommend the fix that makes sense for your machine and your budget, and that includes telling you when replacement is the smarter move.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersNot worth fixing? We say that out loud, and often it saves you the visit fee.
