Washer Won't Drain or Spin

What a full tub actually tells you
Draining and spinning are tied together. Most washers won't spin until the water is out, so a soaked, heavy load usually means the drain step failed, not that the motor quit. Listen while it's supposed to drain. A pump that hums and moves nothing means a blockage. Dead silence points at power to the pump, the lid switch, or the control board. Grinding usually means something hard got past the tub and into the pump housing. Turn the drum by hand too. If it rolls freely, the mechanical side is probably fine and the problem is drainage or a switch. Blockage first, always.
Cheap causes first: hoses, filters, and overload
Start with the drain hose. Kinked behind the machine, crushed against a basement wall, or shoved too far down the standpipe, and water has nowhere to go. Older Connecticut homes often have standpipes packed with lint from decades of use. Front loaders have a small debris filter behind a low access door, and coins, hairpins and bra wire collect there. Overloading blocks spin as well. A wadded comforter throws the drum off balance and the machine cuts spin to protect itself. Pull the load apart by hand, spread it around the drum, run a spin-only cycle. That alone fixes a fair number of calls.
Mid-range causes: pump, lid switch, and belt
Drain pumps fail two ways: they clog, or the impeller cracks and spins air. A sock jammed in the pump inlet is common on top loaders. Lid switches and door locks are the other regular offender. If the machine doesn't believe the lid is shut, it won't spin, even with an empty tub. Sometimes you hear a weak click, sometimes nothing. Belt-driven models slip or snap, so the drum tumbles slow and never gets up to speed. Some direct-drive top loaders lose the shifter or coupler instead. All of that means opening the cabinet, which is our job, not yours.
Safe checks you can do right now
Unplug the washer before you touch anything behind it. Pull the drain hose off the standpipe and look inside for lint packed down like felt. Straighten the kinks. Make sure the hose isn't pushed more than a few inches into the pipe. On a front loader, open the small door at the bottom front, put down a towel and a shallow pan, and clear the filter the way your manual says. Plug it back in, run a rinse-and-spin with a light load. Don't pull side or back panels. Don't reach into the pump area. Anything involving wiring, or a drum you'd have to force, leave alone.

The pump housing comes off and we look at the impeller. Door locks and lid switches get checked for continuity, not by feel. Drain lines get cleared back to the standpipe. On belt models we look at tension and pulley wear while the cabinet is open. Tight basements and narrow stairwells are normal for us, so we bring what we need to work in a small footprint. Can I bail the water out myself?
Yes. Unplug the machine first. Scoop into a bucket, then soak up the rest with towels. A lighter machine is easier for us to move, and we can test a spin cycle right away.
Is it worth fixing an older washer?
Often, yes. Drain pumps, lid switches and belts are normal wear parts on a machine that otherwise runs fine. We tell you what failed and what shape the rest of it is in, then you decide.
Why does it drain but not spin?
That usually points at the lid switch, door lock, belt or drive coupler rather than the pump. An unbalanced load will do it too. Spread the clothes out evenly and try a spin-only cycle first.
