The Dishwasher Filter Most Homes Never Clean

Grit on your dishes and a smell when you open the door usually means the filter in the bottom of the tub is packed, and cleaning it by hand fixes it. Cleaner tablets won't touch that. Most homeowners have never pulled the filter out because nobody told them it was there. Here's what happens when it sits, and what to do instead.

Where the filter is and why you've never seen it

Open the door and slide the bottom rack out, then look at the floor of the tub. On most machines built in the last fifteen years there's a round plastic cap with an arrow or an unlock symbol on it. Twist it out. Underneath sits a flat mesh screen. Older units ground food up instead, so nothing needed cleaning. Newer ones run quiet because they filter rather than grind, and that trade-off puts the filter on you. No tools, no panels, just a quarter turn by hand.

What happens when it sits for years

Food sludge mats over the mesh until water can't pass through fast enough, and the pump ends up fighting pressure it was never built for. Spray pressure drops. Dishes come out with a film and glasses look cloudy. The trapped gunk turns sour, and that's your swamp smell. Grease hardens along the drain path and narrows it. In tight Northeastern basements and older kitchens we get called for slow drains blamed on house plumbing when it's really a clogged dishwasher filter pushing back. Leave it long enough and the strain reaches the pump and the drain motor.

The habit that prevents all of it

Twist the filter out and rinse it under hot tap water. An old toothbrush with a drop of dish soap works on the mesh, going from the outside in. Wipe the well underneath with a paper towel and look for glass chips, seeds, or a fruit sticker parked over the drain opening. Drop it back in and turn until it seats. Two minutes, tops. Scrape plates before loading but skip the full pre-rinse, because detergent needs some soil to work on. What it doesn't need is bones, rice, or paper labels.

How often, honestly

Once a month covers most households. Run the machine daily, or cook a lot of greasy or starchy food, and make it every two weeks. Big family with heavy loads, same answer. A couple running it twice a week can stretch to every six weeks. Set a phone reminder for the first of the month. Wipe the door gasket while you're in there, and pull the bottom rack to check the drain area for standing water. Water still sitting an hour after a cycle means it isn't draining, and that's a separate issue.

Signs prevention time has passed

Standing water in the tub after every cycle is one. So is a grinding or straining noise during drain, or top-rack dishes that come out dry but dirty, which points to weak spray pressure. A smell back within a day of cleaning, black or gray residue on the tub floor that keeps returning, cloudy etching on glassware that won't wipe off. Those say the clog moved past the filter into the drain hose, the pump, or the sump. Clean the filter anyway, run one cycle, and see. If nothing changes, call us and tell us exactly what you hear and see.

The Dishwasher Filter Most Homes Never Clean — what people ask

Can I put the dishwasher filter in the dishwasher?

No. Clean it by hand under running water with a soft brush. Running it through a cycle just recirculates the same trapped food. Stay away from wire brushes, since they tear the fine mesh.

Do all dishwashers have a removable filter?

Most made in the last fifteen years do. Older machines used a grinder, so there's nothing to pull out. Check the tub floor for a twist cap. If all you see is a flat plate held down with screws, leave it alone.

Will cleaning the filter fix a dishwasher that won't drain?

Sometimes. A packed filter is a common cause, so clean it and run one cycle. If water still sits in the bottom, the blockage is deeper in the hose or pump and somebody needs hands on it.

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Tell us the symptom

Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell or see. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions first so the tech shows up with the likely parts already on the truck.

  2. Step 2

    We come look

Pick a window that works for you. The tech tests the machine and checks power, water and drainage, then tells you what failed in plain words. No jargon. No guessing out loud at your kitchen table.

  3. Step 3

    Repair or straight answer

Most jobs finish on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you what it is and why. And if the unit isn't worth fixing, we say that, then you decide.
