Deciding a Dishwasher's Fate
Whether to fix or replace a dishwasher comes down to three things we can check: how old it is, what actually failed, and whether the part still exists. Your machine stopped draining, or it runs a full cycle and the dishes come out gritty, and now you're in the kitchen wondering if it's worth the money. Fair question. Here's how we think it through, in plain terms. Call us if you want a tech to look.

From the technicians at Elite AR
Age is the first thing we ask about
Most dishwashers give you somewhere around ten years of regular use. Under six or seven, repair usually makes sense, because the machine still has life left and one bad part shouldn't end it. Past twelve, we get more careful. Pumps, seals, and control boards tend to fail in sequence once a machine is worn in, so fixing one thing may buy you a season instead of years. Age alone doesn't decide it. It changes how we weigh everything else. Tell us the install year if you know it, or let us read the model tag inside the door frame, which usually carries a date code.
What broke matters more than that it broke
Faults sit in tiers. A clogged drain hose, a torn door gasket, a stuck float switch, a worn spray arm bearing, all ordinary. Parts are common and the repair stays contained. Middle tier is the drain pump, wash motor, heating element, inlet valve, still normal work on a machine that's otherwise sound. Then there's the hard tier. A leaking tub seam. A rusted-through tub bottom, or a failed main control board on an older machine. Those touch the body of the appliance, or the part that's hardest to source. When the tub itself is compromised, we say so. A tub doesn't get patched.
Whether we can get the part at all
Manufacturers stop making parts for discontinued models, and that's the quiet factor most people don't consider. We can diagnose a fault perfectly and still hit a wall where the board or pump isn't produced anymore. Sometimes an aftermarket equivalent exists. Sometimes it doesn't. Before you commit to a repair, we check availability and lead time. A part that ships in two days is a different conversation than one that's back-ordered for weeks while you wash by hand. We'll tell you what we find either way, including when we can't get it.
How the call goes on site
We start with what you saw. Standing water, a code on the panel, a burning smell, dishes still dirty, each one points a different direction. Then we run the machine and watch it fail. We check the drain path, the float, the spray arms, plus the door latch and seal. We pull the filter. We look for water where it shouldn't be, under the unit and behind the kickplate. From there you get a straight read: here's the fault, here's the part, here's whether it's in stock. If the honest answer is that repairing it doesn't add up, we say that out loud instead of selling you work.
When replacing is the right call
A rusted or cracked tub means water gets into your floor. Replace it. A machine past twelve years with a failed control board and a second fault brewing, replace it. If the part is discontinued and no equivalent exists, there's nothing to install, so replace it. One more thing worth mentioning: if it's been leaking quietly and the subfloor under it is soft, deal with that before anything new goes in. Older homes around here often have tight cabinet openings and old shutoffs, so measure and check the valve before you order. Questions on any of this, reach us.
Deciding a Dishwasher's Fate — what people ask
My dishwasher leaves dishes dirty. Is that a big repair?
Usually not. Clogged spray arm holes, a dirty filter, a weak wash pump, or low water fill are the common causes. The filter and spray arms you can clean yourself. The rest we test on site.
There's standing water in the bottom. Can I use it?
Don't run another cycle. Standing water means the drain path is blocked or the pump isn't moving water. Running it again can push water over the door seal onto your floor.
Is a fifteen-year-old dishwasher ever worth fixing?
Sometimes. If the fault is a hose, gasket, or float switch and the tub is sound, a small repair is reasonable. If it's the motor or the control board, we'll usually tell you to replace.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the symptom
Call us or fill out the form and describe what you hear, smell or see. Brand and rough age help. We ask a few questions first so the tech shows up with the likely parts already on the truck.
- Step 2
We come look
Pick a window that works for you. The tech tests the machine and checks power, water and drainage, then tells you what failed in plain words. No jargon. No guessing out loud at your kitchen table.
- Step 3
Repair or straight answer
Most jobs finish on the same visit. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you what it is and why. And if the unit isn't worth fixing, we say that, then you decide.
