How Often a Dryer Vent Really Needs Cleaning
If your dryer needs two cycles to dry one load, check the vent before you blame the machine. The lint duct behind the dryer packs up over time and the hot wet air has nowhere to go, so towels come out warm and damp while nothing on the dryer looks wrong. Nine times out of ten that's the whole story. Here's how often the duct actually needs clearing.

What Clogged Lint Does to a Dryer Over Time
Every load leaves a little more lint in the duct. The passage narrows, the moist air can't get out, and that moisture stays in the drum. So clothes take longer. Longer cycles mean the heating element or gas burner runs more, and the cabinet gets hotter than it was designed to get. Heat kills parts. Thermal fuses blow, cycling thermostats quit, and rollers and bearings dry out and start squealing. Packed lint sitting against a hot duct is also a fire risk, which is the part nobody wants to think about. Most of the dryer failures we see in older Northeast basements go back to a vent nobody touched in years.
The Habit That Prevents Almost All of It
Clean the lint screen before every load. Not most loads, every one. The screen catches the bulk of it, and once it's full the lint goes straight into the duct. Twice a year, go further. Pull the dryer out a foot or two, unplug it if it's electric, and slide the flexible hose off the back. Vacuum what you can reach from both ends with a hose attachment. Then walk outside and look at the exterior flap. It should swing open freely while the dryer runs. Stuck shut with matted lint or a bird nest? Clear it. Ten minutes, twice a year, and you're done.
How Often the Full Duct Needs Clearing
Once a year is the baseline for a normal household, and that means the whole run from wall to outside, not just the ends. Go more often if any of this sounds like your setup. A long duct, over about fifteen feet, or one with several elbows, which we see constantly in rowhouses and walk-ups where the dryer sits nowhere near an exterior wall. Flexible foil or plastic hose instead of rigid metal, since the ridges grab lint. A big family running several loads a day, pets that shed, or a dryer in a finished basement with the duct running up through a joist bay. Small household with a short straight run outside? Once a year still applies. Don't skip it.
Signs You're Already Past Prevention
Watch for clothes that are still damp after a full cycle. The top of the dryer or the whole laundry room getting noticeably hot. A burnt or musty smell while it runs, or lint showing up on the floor behind the machine and around the door seal. Go outside during a cycle: if the flap barely moves and you feel no warm air, the duct is blocked. One more. A dryer that shuts off partway through and won't restart until it cools is a thermal cutoff doing its job because the heat has nowhere to go. At that point vacuuming the ends won't fix anything. The duct has to be cleared properly, and heat-damaged parts often need replacing. Call us.
When to Call Us Instead of Doing It Yourself
Vacuuming the hose and checking the outside flap are fine homeowner jobs. Past that, it isn't worth the risk. Call us if the duct runs inside a wall or up through a ceiling where you can't reach it. Call if you have a gas dryer and moving it means touching the gas line. Call if the dryer has already tripped a thermal fuse, is squealing, or shuts down mid-cycle. Can I just clean the lint screen and skip the duct?
No. The screen catches most of the lint, but fine fibers slip past on every load and settle in the duct. Over a year that adds up to a real blockage, even in a house that's kept clean.
How do I know if my vent hose is the wrong type?
Look behind the dryer. White plastic or thin foil accordion hose traps lint in every ridge and tends to sag. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is the better setup and needs clearing less often.
Does a longer drying time always mean a clogged vent?
Usually, but not always. A failed heating element, a bad thermostat, or a worn drum seal will cause the same symptom. If clearing the vent doesn't help, the trouble is inside the machine.
