What Two Cycles Actually Means
A dryer doesn't really dry clothes with heat alone. It heats air, pushes it through the drum, and blows the moisture out the vent. If that air can't leave, the moisture stays in the drum and lands right back on your laundry. Heat with no airflow equals a hot, damp load. That's why the door and the clothes feel scorching but nothing is dry. Older houses around here make it worse. Long vent runs through finished basements, two or three elbows, crushed foil pipe behind a stacked unit in a walk-up. The dryer is working fine. The path out is the problem.
Cause One: A Clogged Lint Path
Start with the cheapest cause, because it's also the most common. Lint builds in the screen, then in the trap housing, then packs the vent pipe and the outside hood. A screen that looks clean can still be coated with a film from fabric softener sheets. That film blocks air you can't see. Outside, the flap on the wall hood gets stuck shut with lint, a bird nest, or paint. Snow drifts cover ground-level hoods in winter. Clear all of that and many dryers go back to one cycle the same day. This is also a fire concern, not just a laundry annoyance.
Cause Two: The Duct Itself
Foil accordion hose is the usual culprit. It sags, it crushes behind the dryer when you push the machine back to the wall, and its ridges catch lint like a comb. Every 90-degree elbow adds resistance too. If your dryer sits in a basement corner and the vent travels twenty feet with three turns before it reaches daylight, that run is fighting you. Rigid metal duct moves air better than flex. Length matters. So does slope, since a low spot collects condensed water and eventually a lint sludge that hardens. Sometimes the fix is rerouting, not repairing.
Cause Three: Heat and Airflow Parts
If the vent is genuinely clear and times are still long, we move to the machine. On electric units, a weak heating element or a partially failed thermostat can put out some heat but not enough. A cracked or gummed-up blower wheel moves less air even with a clean duct. Worn drum seals let air bypass the clothes entirely. On gas units, burner and ignition problems belong to a technician, full stop. Moisture sensor bars inside the drum get coated with softener residue and tell the control board the load is dry when it isn't, ending cycles early. That one mimics a vent problem closely.
Safe Checks You Can Do, and What We Do Differently
Safe for you: pull the lint screen and rinse it under hot water, then dry it. Unplug an electric dryer and slide it forward to look at the hose for crushes or kinks. Walk outside while a cycle runs and hold your hand at the hood. Weak or cool air means a blockage. No panels, no gas fittings, no wiring. We bring an anemometer and manometer to measure real airflow and static pressure, so we know whether the duct or the machine is at fault. We scope long runs, read control board error codes, and check element resistance and thermostat cutouts with a meter. Call us and tell us how long the run is.

Can a long dry cycle start a fire?
Packed lint plus heat is a real fire risk, which is why long dry times deserve attention. A scorching-hot cabinet or a burning smell means stop using the dryer and get it looked at.
