What "not cooling" actually tells us
There's a big difference between a warm fridge with a cold freezer and one where both sections are warm. If the freezer still freezes but the fresh food side keeps climbing, air isn't moving between the two compartments. That points to airflow or defrost. If everything is warm and you hear nothing running, we're looking at the sealed system or the controls. Note whether you hear a hum, a fan, or dead silence, and whether the inside light works. Those are the first two questions we ask on the phone because they narrow things down fast.
Cause family one: airflow you're blocking
This is the cheapest fix, because it's often free. Grocery bags pressed against the back wall vents will do it. So will a freezer packed so tight air has nowhere to go, or a door gasket that's torn or crusted with syrup and never fully seals. In older Connecticut houses we also see fridges wedged into cabinet nooks with no clearance behind them, so the condenser coils bake in their own heat. Dust on those coils is common in homes with pets or radiator heat. Any of it makes the compressor run constantly and still lose ground.
Cause family two: defrost and frost buildup
Behind the freezer's rear panel sits an evaporator coil, and it's supposed to shed frost a few times a day. When the defrost system quits, that coil turns into a solid block of ice. Air can't pass through, so the fresh food side warms while the freezer holds on a while longer. Look for a sheet of ice on the freezer floor, water pooling under the crisper drawers, or a fan that sounds like it's hitting something. If you unplug the unit for a day and it cools fine afterward, then fails again, that's a defrost fault. We test the heater, thermostat, and control board instead of guessing.
Cause family three: fans, controls, and the sealed system
Two fans matter. The evaporator fan moves cold air around inside, and the condenser fan cools the compressor underneath. Either one can seize. A failed thermistor or damper motor can also tell the fridge it's already cold enough. Deeper down is the sealed system: compressor, refrigerant, capillary tube. A compressor that hums and clicks off, or a fridge that's warm everywhere with warm coils, usually lands there. Sealed system work needs recovery equipment and licensing, so it isn't a homeowner job. Safe checks before you call us
Plug a lamp into the outlet to confirm there's power. Check that the temperature dial wasn't bumped and that a demo or showroom mode isn't switched on. Pull the fridge out and vacuum visible dust off the coils and grille. Feel the back and sides for heat, then run a dollar bill through the door seal to test the grip. Clear food away from interior vents and listen with the door closed for a running fan. That's the limit. Should I unplug the fridge while I wait for service?
If frost is your suspect, unplugging with the doors open for 24 hours can thaw the coil and get it cooling again temporarily. Move food to a cooler first. Tell us you did it, since it changes what we see.
How long should a fridge take to cool after I plug it in?
Give it four to six hours to reach a safe fresh food temperature, and up to a full day to stabilize. Loading it with warm groceries right away slows that down a lot.
Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?
Depends on the failure. Fans, thermistors, defrost parts, and gaskets are usually sensible repairs. A failed compressor on a fifteen-year-old unit is a different conversation, and we'll lay out the options honestly.
