What "no ice" actually tells us
An ice maker is a small machine bolted inside a cold box. It needs three things: water coming in, cold air around the mold, and a working harvest cycle to kick the cubes out. When ice stops, one of those three broke down. The good news is the failure point is usually the cheapest one, water supply. The bad news is a fridge that's warm everywhere, not just short on ice, points at the sealed system or a fan. If your milk is also going bad, mention that when you call. It changes what we bring on the truck.
Cause family one: water isn't getting there
This is where we start, and it's often the whole story. The saddle valve or shutoff behind the fridge may have been bumped closed. In older houses the line runs through a basement joist bay and can kink when the fridge gets pushed back after cleaning. A clogged inline filter chokes flow to a trickle. Frozen fill tubes are common too, a slow drip freezes at the tube mouth and plugs it solid. Signs that point here: hollow or half-moon cubes, very thin cubes, or nothing at all with a quiet ice maker that keeps cycling.
Cause family two: freezer temperature and airflow
The mold has to hit roughly 15°F before the harvest cycle trips. If the freezer drifts warmer, the ice maker just sits there waiting. Causes are boring and fixable: a door gasket that stopped sealing, a bin or frozen pizza blocking the air vent, the temperature dial nudged during a grocery load, or a self-defrost problem letting frost build on the evaporator. Look for frost on the back wall, water pooling under drawers, or ice cream that's soft. Packed-full freezers in small apartment kitchens cause this constantly. Air needs room to move.
Cause family three: the ice maker itself
Sometimes the water and the cold are fine and the unit has just given up. Ejector motors seize. Thermostats and optic sensors stop reading. The bail arm. That wire that senses a full bin, gets stuck up, and the fridge thinks the bin is packed. On the door-dispenser models, a cracked auger or a jammed chute makes it feel like no ice when the bin is actually full. Ice that comes out gray, small, or smelling like the freezer is a different issue: usually filter and water quality, not the mechanism. We test the harvest cycle directly to sort this out.
Safe checks you can do now, and where we take over
Safe: confirm the shutoff valve behind or under the fridge is open. Check the freezer thermometer. Clear anything blocking the vent. Lift the bail arm and let it drop. Pull the bin and look for a solid ice slug at the fill tube. Replace the water filter if it's been a year. Stop there. Don't chip at ice with a knife, don't pull panels, don't touch the compressor area. On our end we meter the inlet valve, read actual mold temperature, force a harvest cycle, and check line pressure. How long should a fridge take to make ice after I reset it?
Give it 12 to 24 hours before you judge. Most units produce a batch every 90 minutes or so once the freezer is at temperature. A fridge that was just plugged in needs a full day.
Can a bad water filter really stop ice completely?
Yes. A clogged filter cuts flow enough that the fill valve can't deliver a full mold. You'll usually see thin or hollow cubes first, then nothing. Filters are a routine replacement item.
Is it worth repairing an ice maker on an older refrigerator?
Often, yes, if the rest of the fridge cools well and the cabinet is sound. We tell you what failed and what it takes to fix. If the sealed system is going, we'll say that plainly.
