Whether to repair or replace a dryer comes down to what failed, not how old the machine is, and we sort that out on the visit. Maybe yours runs but the clothes come out damp. Maybe it hums and won't turn, or squeals loud enough to hear upstairs. So you're standing in a basement laundry area wondering if you should fix it or buy new. Fair question. The answer isn't the same for every machine.

Age matters, but not the way you think
A dryer is a simple machine: motor, heat source, belt, drum, blower, some controls. Plenty of them run well past a decade if the vent stays clean, so age alone doesn't condemn a dryer. What's failing matters more. A ten-year-old dryer with a bad thermal fuse is worth fixing. A ten-year-old dryer with a cracked drum, a seized bearing and a rusted-through blower housing usually isn't. We look at the whole machine instead of the birth year. If the cabinet is solid and the drum spins true, repair is normally the sensible call.
The fault type tells you most of the story
Faults fall into rough groups. Wear items (belts, rollers, idler pulleys, thermal fuses, thermostats, igniters, door switches) are routine and common, and they're straightforward repairs on nearly any brand. Then there are structural faults: a split drum seam, a warped cabinet, a burned-out main harness, heavy rust from a wet basement. Those get expensive in labor and rarely end cleanly. Control boards sit in between. On some machines a board is a simple swap. On others it's paired to the model and hard to source. When we name the failed part, we'll tell you which group it lands in.
Can we actually get the part
Parts availability decides a lot of calls. Common belts, rollers and heating elements are widely stocked and cross several models. Proprietary control boards, unusual drum assemblies and parts for discontinued or import-only models can be back-ordered or gone for good. A dryer we can't get a part for isn't repairable at any effort. Before we commit you to anything, we check what's available for your exact model number. That number is on a sticker inside the door frame or on the back panel. Have it ready when you call us and we can often answer part of this over the phone.
What we do on the visit
We start with the vent, because a clogged vent line causes more no-heat and long-drying complaints than any failed part. Old houses around here have long duct runs through tight basements and crawl spaces. Then we test heat, airflow, drum rotation, and the door and start circuits. We show you what failed and why. Then we lay out the choice in plain terms: this repair holds up, or this machine has more problems behind the first one. You decide. We don't push a repair on a machine we'd walk away from ourselves.
When we tell you to replace it
Some honest cases. A drum with a cracked seam that snags clothing. A dryer that's been through a basement flood, since water and electrical controls don't reconcile. Multiple failures stacked at once on a very old unit. A model where the needed board is discontinued. Also a stacked or compact unit shoehorned into a closet, where the labor to pull it out is heavy and the machine is already tired. If replacement makes more sense, we say so on the spot. We'd rather you hear it once than pay for two visits and still buy a dryer.

My dryer takes three cycles to dry a load. Bad heater?
Sometimes. More often it's restricted airflow: a lint-packed vent, a crushed duct behind the machine, or a blocked exterior flap. Check the outside vent for weak air while it runs. That's a safe check anyone can do.
Is a squealing dryer urgent?
It's usually worn drum rollers, a glide, or an idler pulley. Not dangerous right away, but the noise gets worse and a failed roller can score the drum. Easier and cheaper to address before that happens.
Do you work on gas dryers?
Yes, we service gas and electric dryers from all major brands as an independent shop. Don't attempt any gas component work yourself. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your utility first, then call us.
