When an Appliance Keeps Tripping the Breaker
If a breaker keeps tripping, unplug the appliance that was running, reset the breaker once, and watch it. Call us if one appliance is the cause. A breaker that trips isn't being difficult, it's doing its job. Something is pulling more current than that circuit should carry. The dryer runs ten minutes, the house goes quiet, you flip the breaker back in the basement and it happens again. Maybe it's the microwave or the window AC instead. Worth finding out what.

Do these things first, in order
1. Unplug the appliance that was running when the breaker went. Leave it unplugged. 2. Reset the breaker once. Push it fully off, then firmly on. 3. Watch the circuit with the appliance still unplugged. If it holds for an hour, the appliance is the likely cause. 4. If it trips again with nothing plugged in, the problem is the wiring or the breaker itself. That's an electrician, not us. 5. Write down what was running, the time, and how long it took to trip. That timeline tells a technician a lot.
What not to do
Don't keep resetting. A breaker that trips over and over is heating up, and each reset sends full current back into whatever is faulting. Don't move the appliance to a different outlet to "see if it works there." You've just moved the fault to a new circuit. Don't use an extension cord or power strip on a dryer, range, window AC, or space heater. Don't tape, wedge, or hold a breaker in the on position. And leave the cover on the appliance. Motors and boards hold charge, and there's nothing in there you can safely diagnose.
When to stop and get out
Some signs mean you stop troubleshooting and act. A burning or fishy plastic smell near an outlet or the panel. Scorch marks, melted plug prongs, or a discolored receptacle. A breaker or outlet cover that's hot to the touch. Buzzing or crackling from the panel. Any smoke at all, however faint. If you see or smell any of that, leave the appliance off and unplugged. If the burning smell is at the panel itself, get everyone out and call the fire department from outside. Don't reset anything, and don't go back in to check. Smell gas near a range or dryer? Leave first, then call the gas utility from outside.
Us or the utility company
Call your utility if the trouble is bigger than one circuit. Lights dimming and surging across the house, half the house dead, a hot or sparking meter, a damaged service line outside. Their equipment runs up to the meter. Call a licensed electrician if the circuit trips with everything unplugged, if the outlet is scorched, or if the panel is warm or noisy. Call us when one appliance is clearly the culprit. A dryer motor that stalls and draws hard, a dishwasher heater shorting, a compressor that kicks the breaker on startup. What we look at when we get there
We start with the appliance, not the panel. Usual suspects: a dryer heating element grounded against its housing, a worn motor drawing high amps, a pump seized with debris, a wet control board in a basement laundry, or a chewed cord behind a unit that's been shoved tight to the wall. Older Northeast housing adds its own wrinkle. Tight basements, shared circuits, and outlets that were wired long before today's appliance loads. Sometimes the appliance is fine and it's simply sharing a circuit with too much else. We'll tell you straight which it is, and if the answer is an electrician, we'll say so.

Is it safe to reset the breaker one more time?
Once is reasonable, with the suspect appliance unplugged. Repeated resets are not. Each one pushes full current through a fault and heats the breaker. If it trips a second time, stop and start diagnosing.
Why does it only trip when the dryer heats up?
Heating elements draw the most current. A cracked element touching its housing, or a motor working hard against a clogged vent, will pull enough to trip on the heat cycle while running fine on air-fluff.
Could the breaker itself just be worn out?
Yes. Breakers weaken over the years and trip below their rating. But test the appliance first. If the circuit still trips with nothing plugged in, have a licensed electrician check the breaker and wiring.
