Dust built up on the coils under or behind the box, and the machine has been fighting to dump heat for months. Here is what that does to it, plus the five-minute fix.

What dust actually does to your fridge
Condenser coils dump heat out of the sealed system. Cover them with a blanket of dust and pet hair and the heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor keeps running to hit the same temperature. Run time climbs. The compartment drifts warm even though the thermostat reads fine. In older homes with tight kitchens, or a fridge shoved against a wall in a basement pantry, airflow is already poor, so the dust matters more. Over a couple of years that constant running wears the compressor and the condenser fan motor. Those are the expensive parts. A vacuum and ten minutes would have kept the load off them.
The five-minute habit
Unplug the fridge. That is the whole safety step, and it is not optional. Pull the toe-grille off the bottom front, since most snap or pop free by hand, then shine a light underneath. If you see gray fuzz, run a vacuum crevice tool along the coils and the floor beneath. A coil brush from a hardware store reaches deeper. If your coils are on the back, roll the unit out and vacuum the black grid gently. Do not bend the fins. Do not remove any screwed-on panel, and stay away from anything with wiring. Snap the grille back, plug in, push it back and leave a couple inches of clearance.
How often to do it
Twice a year for most kitchens, and spring and fall is easy to remember. If you have a shedding dog or cat, make it every three months, because pet hair mats onto coils faster than anything else. Same goes if the fridge sits in a basement or garage, where dust settles heavier and gets tracked around. Carpet near the kitchen adds lint too. While you are down there, check the drip pan for standing water and wipe the door gasket with warm soapy water. A gasket that has gone stiff or torn lets warm air in and makes the compressor work just as hard as dirty coils do.
Signs prevention time has passed
Cleaning helps a struggling fridge. It will not fix a broken one. Call somebody if the compressor runs constantly and never cycles off, if the freezer holds but the fresh food side sits above 40 degrees, or if the outside cabinet walls get hot to the touch instead of just warm. Clicking every few minutes followed by silence points at a start component or the compressor itself. Ice building on the back wall of the freezer usually means defrost, not coils. Water pooling under the crisper is a clogged drain line. Those are all inside jobs, sealed system and wiring and controls, and they need tools and testing, not a vacuum.

Can I clean coils without unplugging the fridge?
Don't. Unplugging takes two seconds and removes the risk entirely. Food is fine for the few minutes you're working. Plug it back in as soon as the grille is on.
My coils are hidden and I can't find them.
Many newer units have them sealed behind a rear panel you shouldn't remove. If the toe-grille shows nothing and the back is a solid cover, leave it alone and have a tech access it.
Will cleaning coils fix a fridge that's already warm?
Sometimes, if dust was the only problem. Give it 24 hours after cleaning and recheck the temperature. Still warm means something else, like a fan, a control, or the sealed system.
